Chongqing Installs "Black Box" to Monitor Polluting Enterprises

Pollution monitoring systems have been installed in more than 30 enterprises in southwest China 's Chongqing Municipality, where the amount of illegal discharge of industrial wastes has alarmed the local government.

Sources said that the move is aimed at cracking down on unlawful activities such as discharging pollutants secretly and randomly stopping operation of waste disposal facilities.

The on-line monitoring system, an instrument similar to the black box on a plane, can record all the operation data of pollutant treatment equipment, providing irrefutable evidence for environmental protection departments.

Sources with the municipal bureau for environmental protection said that the city will install such instruments in another 200 polluting enterprises after 2005.
