Career Prosecutor Appointed New Indonesian Attorney General

A career prosecutor has been appointed as Indonesia's new Attorney General and the 33rd member of the country's Cabinet.

He is Muhamad Abdurrachman, who until now, has served as a senior criminal prosecutor on the attorney general's staff in Jakarta.

He is due to be sworn-in on Wednesday.

The long-awaited appointment follows the unveiling of President Megawati Sukarnoputri's first Cabinet last Thursday, when she announced her ministerial lineup, but failed to name the attorney general.

Observers say the post of attorney is a crucial one and Abdurrachman will oversee a backlog of high-profile corruption and human rights cases.
