Gong Zhichao Enjoys Easy Win in Singapore Open
Gong Zhichao of China enjoyed an easy victory on the first day of the Singapore Open badminton tournament Wednesday in Singapore, demolishing Indonesia's Dian Vovita Sari 7-1, 7-2, 7-0.
Gong, ranked third in the world, is tipped to lift the women's singles crown following compatriot Gong Ruina's late withdrawal because of injury. The World Grand Prix finalist will next meet Lee Yin Yin of Malaysia, who defeated Singapore's Liu Fan 6-8, 7-1, 4-7, 7-5, 7-1.
Denmark's Camilla Martin, ranked fourth in the world, took barely 25 minutes to beat a nervous Li Li of Singapore 7-1, 7-0, 7- 3, setting up a meeting with Indonesian Atu Rosalina in the second round.
Singapore's Liu Zhen defeated Malaysia's Wong Mew Choo 7-0, 4-7, 4-7, 7-4, 7-3. She will meet in the second round with Chinese world number 12 Dai Yun.
