Beijing to Become Greener

Beijing will build nine afforestation projects to make the city greener before the 2008 Olympic Games is held here, local government sources have said.

According to a plan, the forest coverage rate in the city will reach 45 percent and the per capita green space will be more than 15 sq m by 2007.

Of these projects, 10 forested zones, each with an area of over 30,000 sq m, will be built in the suburbs in the coming five years.

According to the plan, greenbelts covering a total area of 1, 300 hectares will be built along both sides of the fourth ring road, known as the "Olympic Bid Road," and 100-meter-wide greenbelts will be built on each side of the fifth ring road, which is under construction.

At the same time, afforestation will be carried out along 255 major streets in Beijing, and all the bare land in the downtown areas will be covered with trees and grass before 2005.
