Handset Users Over 120.6m, Atop the World

By the end of last July, China has by the number of its handset users surpassed that of the United States to become the globe's biggest mobile telecom market, according to the Ministry of Information Industry (MII).

MII told that China has by far brought mobile telecom access to 120.6 million users against 120.1 million in the United States.

The information industry, led by telecom, has turned out to be a pilot branch in the whole of the industrial sector and has become a major contributor to the Chinese economy in recent years.

The IT industry is expected to reap a yearly income amount to take over 7 percent of China's GDP within five years, according to a forecast by the State Development Planning Commission (SDPC). An annual average growth of more than 20 percent will be achieved by mobile telecom. Handset users in China are expected to exceed 260 million by 2005.
