Panasonic Recalls Mobile Phones with "ROC" Mistake

Panasonic has recalled all mobile phones in China's market to fix the original software that refers to Taiwan as the "Republic of China" (ROC).

A citizen in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, pointed out that in the "country" menu of his Panasonic mobile phone, the abbreviation for Taiwan was listed as "ROC," according to Tuesday's Beijing Youth Daily.

Panasonic quickly responded to the discovery on August 11, apologizing to all customers in both the Chinese mainland and Taiwan and at the same time announcing the recall of all mobile phones.

Officials with a Beijing venture of Panasonic attributed the error to the software package, which was produced in Europe, the newspaper reports.

The error was "not their fault," said an employee from Panasonic.

The Beijing branch promised that all the recalled mobile phones will go on the market again after the software is corrected, and people may have their phones repaired at any Panasonic maintenance station for free.

The venture will soon offer a formal public explanation for the mistakes, the newspaper said.
