Russia Denies Receipt of Detailed US Proposals on Missile Defense
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov on Tuesday denied reports that the US submitted a text of detailed proposals on missile defense to Russia during consultations between their military experts.
"We received a voluminous book from the U.S., but it could just as easily be called the philosophy of the new missile defense system, since there is no concrete data in it," he said.
On the U.S. proposal for developing a new architecture for international security and strategic stability, Ivanov said Russia realizes that conditions have changed, but still has no clear idea of what should be changed.
"Probably the Americans do not quite exactly know the answer, either," Ivanov noted, saying the security consultations would continue a search for the answer.
Russia and the United States have launched a new dialogue on strategic security and missile defense after the Genoa summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush in June.
They decided at the summit to link discussions on missile defense with Russian calls for deep cuts in nuclear arsenals.
