Chinese Customs Told to Be Speedy, Rigorous

Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi has urged Shanghai Customs to speed up working procedures while conducting rigorous checks into goods crossing the Chinese borders in an effort to promote foreign trade and economic development.

Wu made the remarks Monday when inspecting the Shanghai Customs, whose automatic system can examine up to 7,500 items an hour.

She also urged customs, quality control bureaus and banks to intensify cooperative efforts to reduce the time required to process export and import goods.

Shanghai should explore new means in this respect and serve as role model for the rest of China, she said.

Wu said that Shanghai has a density of hi-tech industries and must pay close attention to the customs efficiency. She hoped that the Customs can improve their supervision ability on port as well as customs clearance efficiency in order to create a better environment for export.

Wu noted that adequate supervision of hi-tech enterprises is a new problem confronting the customs; therefore, customs should adjust to modern logistics developments, and to update customs management in all areas, including theory, system and technology innovation.

The reform of the customs clearance and the establishment of electronic law enforcement system at ports will ensure the efficiency and thoroughness of customs as well as its integrity.

She urged the customs to keep on cracking down on smuggling and to foster a group of customs staff with keen political awareness, strong ability and responsibility.

Wu also inspected the Waigaoqiao container checking station in Shanghai customs.
