South China's Customs Seizes Smuggled Digital CamerasThe Gongbei Customs Checkpoint in Zhuhai, the nearest Chinese mainland city to Macao, has seized over 300 smuggled digital cameras and accessories totaling some 100,000 yuan (12,000 U.S. dollars). The smuggled goods were found last week in an Isuzu jeep driving from Macao to the Chinese mainland as it was being inspected at the Gongbei checkpoint. Customs officers found 305 digital cameras with wires and installation disks, all hidden in interlayers on the jeep's gates, under the seats and in the oiltank. Statistics show that the Gongbei Customs Checkpoint has stepped up efforts this year to crack down on the smuggling of high technology products, digital cameras included. It has dealt with over 110 such cases during the past seven months, involving 10.38 million yuan (1.25 million U.S. dollars). |
