Cuban Leader Celebrates 75th Birthday in Caracas

Cuban President Fidel Castro celebrated his 75th birthday Monday with an honor banquet given by his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez, an event on his third official visit to Venezuela.

According to an official communiqu released Monday by the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry, the celebration held in the Macagua Club by the Caroni river in the southern Venezuelan state of Bolivar, took place after the signing of Memorandum of Understanding of Venezuela-Cuba Cooperation.

At the banquet, Chavez said in his speech that the visit of the Cuban leader "is welcomed by Venezuelans because it gives us an opportunity to let him know how much we love him."

Castro, who arrived Saturday in Venezuela, was scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of a 680-kilometer energy power-lines, which will bring electricity to Bolivar state in southern Venezuela, and Roraima in northern Brazil.

Castro and Chavez signed two agreements, one on agricultural cooperation and the other on tourism cooperation, both of which are seen as complements to the Integral Agreement of Cuba- Venezuela Cooperation.
