Israeli Troops Enter Jenin

Israeli troops entered the Palestinian-ruled West Bank town of Jenin under the cover of helicopters and tanks early Tuesday, taking over the executive building of Jenin authority and the headquarters of the Palestinian security forces there.

Palestinian security officials said that Israeli troops besieged Jenin in a quick operation late Monday night and launched attacks from east, west and north of the town at midnight.

Nearly 400 Israeli soldiers, along with many tanks, armored vehicles and ambulances took part in the operation.

Israeli troops exchanged fire with the Palestinian security forces, and tanks destroyed a number of Palestinian security posts, they said. So far there were no reports of casualties.

Meanwhile, members of the Israeli internal security agency, with the help of the army, held up vehicles of Jenin residents in order to arrest suspects wanted by Israeli authorities.

Jenin began to practice self-rule in 1995.
