HK Seminar Highlights China's Western Region DevelopmentA seminar on China's western region development was held Monday at the Hong Kong Arts Center to highlight opportunities for local small and medium enterprises (SMEs).The seminar is a follow-up to the visit by a Hong Kong delegation, led by Administrative Secretary Donald Tsang, to Xi'an, Beijing, Chengdu and Urumqi in May, according to the Hong Kong Trade and Industry Department, the organizer of the event. The seminar provided a forum for local SMEs to find out more about business opportunities in the Western Region, and to exchange views with business leaders having a good understanding of the Region. "China's imminent accession to the World Trade Organization would accelerate its economic growth," Joshua Law, the department' s director-general, said at the seminar. "This, coupled with the decision to develop western China, would bring enormous changes to the marco-economic environment of the Region." In view of these changes and challenges, the Hong Kong government would spare no efforts in helping local businessmen understand more about the business prospects in the region, he said. His department has already set up a special "Western Development" section on its homepage. This section has also been hyperlinked to the department's SME homepage, he said. It can facilitate the business sector, specially the SMEs, to obtain relevant information about the Region. "The department would strengthen our liaison with local business sector, in particular the SMEs, to reflect their concerns about the investment environment of the Western Region, and their views and suggestions to the relevant mainland authorities through the appropriate channels," Law added. |
