China Steps Up Preparations for WTO Entry

The Chinese Customs has stepped up its efforts to prepare for the country's imminent entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), Deputy Commissioner of China's General Administration of Customs (GACC) Zhao Guanghua said Tuesday in Shanghai.

Zhao made the remarks at a press conference held after the conclusion of the 7th APEC Customs-Business Dialogue (ACBD).

Zhao said that China's accession into the WTO is progressing soundly and the country is expected to become a member at the end of this year, which will surely have great influence on the work of the Customs.

Customs at all levels throughout the country have been receiving training and education in recent years to improve their sense of services, so as to meet the challenges arising from the entry into the organization, Zhao said.

He said that related laws and regulations should be further improved, following the great deal of work already done by the Chinese Customs, and the promulgation for implementation of the Customs Law on January 1 this year.

The rules of the revised Customs Law are identical with that of the WTO, he added.

In addition, the Customs is revising related rules and regulations on tariffs, which are expected to be finished before China joins the WT0. Rules governing the protection of intellectual property rights and other fields are also being revised, he said.
