Strong Earthquake Hits Northeastern Japan

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 hit northeastern Japan early Tuesday, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said.

The agency said a strong earthquake shook an extensive area from the nation's northernmost island of Hokkaido to the northern part of Honshu, Japan's main island.

The immediate estimate put the intensity at 6.2 on the Richter scale although it can be revised later, said an official at the agency's earthquake division.

"No warning for tidal waves was issued," the Japanese agency official added.

The focus of the quake was located off the northeast coast of Aomori prefecture about 30 kilometers under the seabed, he said.

Spokesmen at the Hokkaido Prefectural Police, Aomori Prefectural Police and Iwate Prefectural Police -- three prefectures shaken by the quake -- said there were no reports of earthquake damages in their prefectures.
