HK Companies Have Opportunities in Mainland's IT Market: Report

Being a major telecommunications and internet traffic/content hub in Asia, Hong Kong is in an advantageous position to capture the opportunities offered by China's imminent entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), says a report published Monday by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

The report, titled "Making the Early Call: Telecom and IT Opportunities for Hong Kong on the Chinese Mainland", attempted to outline the expected changes in the regulatory and business environment following China's WTO accession and discuss opportunities for Hong Kong companies.

Four major areas are covered, namely, internet services, e- commerce, mobile and fixed-line services and software development.

On internet services, the report says Hong Kong companies have shown an active interest in the mainland's internet services market and with excellent international connectivity, Hong Kong companies can provide high-quality internet-related services including ISPs, ICPs, ASPs, and internet broadcasting.

On e-commerce, it says as Hong Kong companies have substantial investment in China as well as extensive international customer connections, they have an edge in cooperating with mainland companies in developing B2C/B2B e-commerce.

On Mobile and fixed line services, it says Hong Kong companies are strong in providing value-added services, such as transaction platform for mobile commerce and international communications, or performing the role of services re-seller.

On software development, the report says Hong Kong companies can form partnership with mainland distributors to build up sales network.

It says Hong Kong companies are particularly suited to play the role of a catalyst by providing technical expertise and marketing skills, as well as facilitating access to funding.
