One person is dead and 19 are missing after their fishing boat sank amid a tropical storm on the sea southwest of South China's Hainan Province Sunday.

The boat carried 73 passengers, 53 of whom were rescued from the water and ferried to safety. They received medical treatment at a nearby hospital.

The storm trapped more than 40 fishing boats at the sea in areas 20 to 40 sea miles southwest of the Hainan city of Sanya.

The search for the missing 19 people is continuing, said Chen Chuanmin, deputy secretary-general of Hainan Provincial Government. Seven helicopters and 30 rescue boats have been involved, and a special rescue team headed by top local leaders has been assembled.
