Students From Chinese Mainland High on Macao's Universities

About 250 high school students from the Chinese interior areas have applied to attend four Macao- based universities, which for the first time participated in the country's annual enrollment drive.

The four universities include the University of Macao, Macao Polytechnic Institute, Macao Institute of Tourism and Macao University of Science and Technology, Monday's China Youth Daily said.

The average tuition for the University of Macao is estimated to reach 50,000-80,000 yuan (about 6,000-9,600 U.S. dollars) each year, which is higher than that in China's interior colleges, according to the newspaper.

This is the first time Macao-based universities have come inland to enroll students, and the response has been enthusiastic, said an official with Beijing Institute of Education and Examination.

Enrollment totals will not be calculated until September, the official said.
