Shanghai Carries Out Civil Defense Drill

Shanghai,this leading commercial and industrial metropolis conducted a civil defense drill in its suburbs Monday morning, to test people's ability to react efficiently in case of an emergency.

In the half-hour drill, air raid warnings were sounded in 12 alarm locations, and 1,200 people were coordinated to evacuate people and do mock rescue operations.

This is Shanghai's first such drill in 50 years, sponsored by the municipal civil defense office.

Over 40 professional rescue teams and civil groups took part in the drill, arranging shelter, evacuation, medical treatment, transfer of hazardous goods, and makeshift bridges.
