China's Xia Xuanze Wins Men's Badminton Singles Crown

China's Xia Xuanze crashed Marleve Mainaky of Indonesia to win the men's singles title at the World Grand Prix Badminton Finals championships in Brunei on Sunday.

Xia, last year's All England champion, won 7-4, 7-5, 2-7, 8-6 in a 49-minute battle in his first Grand Prix Finals appearance.

Marleve, who was playing in his second consecutive final of the GP Finals series, only found his rhythm in the third game, which he easily won 7-2. Although the Indonesian felt confident when he outplayed his opponent in the fourth game, it was not enough for him to overcome the Chinese player who was even two rungs below him in the world rankings.

In the final game, Xia found himself trailing 0-3 before gaining points with neat net play and leaping smashes to lead 6-3 but could not finish the game off. Marleve came back to force deuce but it was too late for him. Xia sealed the game 8-6 to win the match and title.

Xia attributed his win to his ability to read his opponent's style and said that he was sharp with his shots on Sunday.

"Marleve is a good player but I did not allow him to dominate the match." he said. "Winning the GP Finals is indeed a great pleasure as it inspires me to greater heights."
