Forum on Underground Water in Western China Opens

A forum on underground water in western China opened Saturday in Yinchuan, capital of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

The forum, jointly organized by three organizations including the environmental division of the Chinese Ministry of Land and Resources, features the theme "Underground Water and Economic and Social Development in Western China."

Water is the key to China's ongoing campaign to develop its vast western region. However, the contradiction between the supply of and demand for water resources, especially underground water resources, has become increasingly prominent, and has become the main factor restricting the development of western China, according to experts.

During the four-day forum, participants, including a dozen academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and specialists in geology, will discuss issues regarding the sustainable use of underground water, the geological ecology and disasters related to underground water, as well as the research, development and management of underground water.

The participants are expected to put forward practical opinions and suggestions for decision-making concerning the rational use of water resources, the sustainable development of the national economy, and the shortage of water in western China.
