Moscow Condemns Bombing Against Iraq by U.S., Britain
Moscow sees the recent bombing against Iraq by Britain and the United States, which was not authorized by the U.N. Security Council, as a severe violation of international law, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday.
The move could only complicate the solution of problems concerning Iraq, the ministry's information and press department said.
The statement by a Pentagon representative that the Friday strikes were delivered against a communications center, an anti- aircraft battery and a radar station "does not justify the U.S.- British military actions against a sovereign state," the department said.
The department believed that it is necessary to stop using force as soon as possible and to create favorable conditions for resuming dialogue between Baghdad and the U.N. to secure the main goal: restoration of international monitoring in exchange for suspension and then lifting of the sanctions against Iraq.
Dozens of U.S. and British warplanes using guided missiles and bombs attacked three air defense sites in southern Iraq on Friday, killing one person and injuring 11.
Friday's bombing is the largest U.S.-British military action after the February bombing of Baghdad's outskirts.
