32 Chinese Tourists Injured in U.S. Bus CrashA bus carrying Chinese tourists collided with a van Thursday on a highway leading to the Grand Canyon, injuring 32 passengers ¡ª at least four critically, authorities said.Flagstaff Medical Center had received 13 patients by mid-afternoon. Four were in critical condition, seven in serious, a hospital official said. About 20 others were being taken to the hospital by bus, authorities said. None of the six people in the van were hurt. The crash occurred about 11 a.m. on state Highway 64, 13 miles north of Williams. The accident was near the highway's intersection with U.S. 180, the main highway to the canyon's South Rim. Driver Zhi L. Liag, 48, told authorities he leaned over to pick up something when his bus, carrying 52 passengers, crossed the center line and hit the rear of a trailer being towed by the van. The highway was closed both ways Thursday. The bus was operated by Charter Master Inc. of San Gabriel, Calif., authorities said. Company officials didn't return a phone call seeking comment Thursday. |
