Shanghai Increases Cooperation with DellShanghai is expecting to increase cooperation with the world's computer giant Dell to meet the growing demand for personal computers (PC) in the city and the nation as well, said Shanghai Mayor Xu Kuangdi said Thursday. In a meeting with Kevin B. Rollins, president and chief operating officer of the Dell Computer Corp., Xu said that almost every family in Shanghai is eager to arm their children with computer knowledge and skills. There are about ten PCs in every 100 families and one PC for 43 students at schools in Shanghai, the most prosperous metropolis in China. Shanghai is willing to cooperate with Dell in developing cheap computers to school education, especially in the underdeveloped western China, where PCs priced at around 2,500 yuan (300 U.S. dollars) would be welcomed by schools and families there, said the mayor. Rollins said Dell is also very willing to work with Shanghai to produce computers for education purposes. Dell is producing laptops in Shanghai through a Taiwanese company. Dell has set up factories in the eastern province of Fujian and enjoys quite a big share in the market of PCs and laptops in China. |
