Brain Tumor Successfully Removed by Robot

A robot uses its long arm to insert a thin surgical needle into a brain tumor sufferer's head, 20 minutes later, the pathological tissue of the patient was removed. This is the scene of China's first successful surgical operation performed by long-distance controlled robot.

This is revealed by China Navy Hospital, surgical robot in this hospital has successfully conducted brain surgery operation for the patient, while operator of the robot is 1,000 meters away from the operation room in another building giving orders for every step of the operation.

The long-distance controlled robot system employed in this operation was co-invented by Robotics Research Institute, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and China Navy Hospital. Researchers said that Internet has played a significant role in this system, no matter how far it is, operation can be performed in this way.

The women brain tumor patient who took the operation, aged 56, is now under good condition.

It is learned that as preparations before performing the operation medical experts have to analyze the patient's CT image then make operation plan and following the steps, they use mouse to control the robot far away in the operation room. According to orders given by experts, the robot will automatically search operation part and pin the puncture position to finish the work of removing the pathological tissue.
