Experts of World Organizations to Inspect Cambodian Ability to Join WTO
A team of experts from six world organizations arrived in Cambodia last week to assess the country's ability to join the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Cambodia Daily reported Thursday.
The task force includes researchers from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the U.N. Development Program, the U.N. Commission on Trade and Development and the International Trade Center.
The team arrived in Cambodia for the investigation just after Minister of Commerce Cham Prasidh requested technical assistance from donors at the Consultative Group meeting in Tokyo in June "to have a broader picture of the problem," said Cham Prasidh.
He believed that the team will hopefully find "measures to improve the situation... for integration into the world trade system".
Sandy Cuthbertson, expert of the International Trade Center, said that the team will examine Cambodia's strength and weakness in its approaches to the world economy, prior to any possible entry into the WTO.
The experts will stay in Cambodia for three weeks, after which it will issue a report to the government, with recommendations for improving infrastructure and trade regulations.
