Guangdong to Introduce Water Consumption Limit SystemRelevant departments in south China's Guangdong Province have been working together to set water consumption limits for local organizations and businesses in all sectors.An official from the provincial water resources bureau explained that this move is aimed at turning this southern Chinese province into a water-efficient region by improving local residents' awareness and reducing the amount of waste water. Guangdong Province, which sits on China's southern coast, abounds in water resources, but the amount of water wastage is also alarming. A recent survey shows that the per capita daily water consumption is 379 liters in the province's urban areas, much higher than the national average of 218 liters, while the average annual water consumption on each mu (about 0.0667 hectares) of farmland in the province is 827 cu m, five to ten times that in north China. Last year alone, water consumption in Guangdong was 43 billion cu m, which placed this southern Chinese province high up in the country. Up to now only Heilongjiang Province in northeast China and the Shanghai Municipality on the southeast China coast have been enforcing a water consumption limit and they have achieved noticeable success. |
