Koizumi to Decide on Yasukuni Visit After Friday Meeting

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said Thursday he will decide whether to visit Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine on the anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II next Wednesday after meeting with senior officials of coalition parties on Friday.

Koizumi told a press conference in Nagasaki that he will make a final decision on the visit to the Shinto shrine, which honors 14 Class A war criminals among about 2.5 million war dead, after discussing the matter with the secretaries general of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, the New Komeito party and the New Conservative Party.

Coalition sources said the premier will meet with the secretaries general on Friday night at his official residence.
