China Inaugurates Vessel Reporting System

China recently put into trial use a vessel reporting system which experts said will greatly boost the country's maritime search and rescue ability.

The system requires all major vessels registered in China and sailing in the area to the west of 130 degrees east longitude and to the north of nine degrees north latitude to report their positions and relevant information.

For example, vessels should report when they are leaving a Chinese port or the designated water area, or entering the designated area from other waters.

The system is part of a global maritime rescue and safety system. It is managed by the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration.
