Int'l Procurement for Three Gorges Left-Bank Power Station Concluded

With the last two contracts signed Wednesday for the procurement of two big computer-control systems for the Left-Bank Power Station at the Three Gorges, international tendering for the first-phase construction of the world's largest hydropower project has concluded.

Commissioned by the China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Development Corporation (CTGPC), the Three Gorges International Tendering Co. has organized a series of biddings for the procurement since 1997, with the total purchasing value amounting to one billion U.S. dollars.

At today's signing ceremony, ABB Automation from Sweden and AlSTOM Switzerland clenched contracts with CTGPC for providing the project with computer supervision and control systems for the cascade dispatch center and left-bank power station, respectively.

The Three Gorges Hydro-Power Project (TGP) built on China's largest river, the Yangtze, will complete the permanent shiplock for water storage in 2003 upon schedule, when the first group of 14 generators becomes operational, with a combined installed capacity of 9.8 million kilowatts at the Left-Bank Power Station, said Huang Yuanfang, deputy chief engineer of the CTGPC.

"The two major automation control systems are essential for safe and efficient operation of the TGP," he said.

Rene Pontier, vice-president of ALSTOM Switzerland, said that the company regards the system design as its most important project, and pledged to provide the giant hydro-power project with the world's most modern computer control system.

Huang said that international tendering has not only helped ensure the quality of the hydro-power construction, but also save the state money for the mammoth project.
