Chinese Foreign Minister Meets US Senators

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan met Thursday with Joseph Biden, Jr., chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Senate and other US senators in his touring party.

Tang briefed the guests on China's foreign policy, and stance on the anti-proliferation and human rights issues. He said that China is committed to an independent foreign policy of peace, and safeguards and promotes peace and stability of the Asia-Pacific region and the world.

Tang said that China opposes and has never been engaged in the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery. China's human rights have improved, he added.

Tang noted that China attaches importance to the visit of Biden, and welcomes more US members of congress to visit the country.

He said the Chinese government values Sino-US relations and China and the US have shared common interests although differences still exist.

The foreign minister noted that China hopes to expand contact and dialogue with the United States, and to promote mutual understanding and trust, so as to improve Sino-US relations.

Biden said that Sino-US relations are at a critical point in time, and it is important for both sides to strengthen trust and avoid misunderstanding. Biden said he came here to exchange views with the Chinese side to promote mutual understanding.

Great changes have taken place in China over the past 20 years, and China's international influence has expanded, he said, adding that this conforms to US interests.
