Hydropower Project at Gongbo Gorge Set Off

The Gongbo gorge hydropower station, located on the upper reaches of the Yellow River began construction on August 8 in Xunhua county, Qinghai province. It is the third large one next to Longyang and Lijia gorge hydropower stations in the upper reaches of the Yellow River.

With a total investment of 7 billion yuan, the station will be equipped with five sets of hydraulic power generators, having a total installed capacity of 1.5 million kw. Mainly used for generating power, it also functions otherwise as flood control, irrigation and water supply. The station consists of three parts as dam, channel water-drawing system for power generating and sluicing building. The first unit is expected to go into operation in 2004 with the whole construction period lasting six and a half years. The station will serve as a great drive to economic growth in Qinghai and supply power for Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia. It can also help regulate water flow in the Yellow River, intercept silt and improve ecological environment for the provinces in the lower reaches of the Yellow River.
