Indonesian President Orders Arrest of Tommy Soeharto

Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri Wednesday ordered police to step up efforts to catch the fugitive son of former president Soeharto Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra.

"The president has ordered the National Police chief and Jakarta Police to resolve this problem and immediately arrest Tommy because he has been convicted," Megawati's secretary Bambang Kesowo was quoted by the Jakarta Post.com online news service as saying.

Jakarta Police were offering a 500 million rupiah (55,000 US dollars) reward for information on the whereabouts of the playboy millionaire.

Governor of Jakarta Sutiyoso is offering a one billion rupiah (110,000 US dollars) reward.

Police helicopters have been dropping thousands of posters throughout the capital showing a picture of Tommy with a beard.

Police say the picture was used by Tommy to obtain a fake identification card under the alias of Ibrahim.

This week, police found a cache of weapons in the homes of two friends of Tommy, who has been on the run since last November when he was sentenced to 18 months in jail for graft.

Two suspects in last month's assassination of the Supreme Court Justice M. Syafiuddin Kartasasmita -- who had sentenced Tommy -- were quoted by police as saying Tommy had masterminded the killing.
