Thailand to Host Largest-ever Basketball Tournament for Global Chinese

The event, which will be organized by the Bangkok Basketball Club in association with the Sports Authority of Thailand, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Nation Multimedia Group will take place at 12 venues here.

The main objective of this year's competition is to strengthen ties among Chinese all over the world and promote the sport in Thailand.

Among the overseas participants are 61 teams from China's mainland, with Jiangsu Province fielding a majority of nine squads while Guangdong Province and Beijing will be represented by eight and seven teams, respectively.

Thailand, the host country, will put in 20 teams. Indonesia and China's Hong Kong will field 15 teams each while 12 teams from China's Taiwan and 10 from the United States. Malaysia, China's Macao, Singapore, the Philippines, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia and Brunei will also send their teams here.

This year's event features nine age groups, six in men's and three in women's categories.

The 14th episode in Penang, Malaysia, in 1999 held the previous record of 117 teams.
