Huge Sum of Money Invested in Harnessing Geological Disasters in the Three Gorges
As learnt from the Department of Land and Resources of Hubei Province China will set up a leading group for geological disaster prevention in the Three Gorges Dam regions. It will invest 4 billion yuan to harness the geological disasters such as landslide in the coming three years
Prevention of the geological disasters in the Three Gorges Dam regions is an important part of the Project. With the time for water-retainig quickly approaching, the prevention and harnessing of geological disasters draws an earnest attention day by day.
According to the statistics provided by Changjiang Water Resources Commission, in the Three Gorges Dam regions they found 1,302 spots with hidden troubles. The Yichang City alone occupies 202 of them. The landslide area totals 23.2 square kilometers. The gross volume adds up to 510 million cubic meters. One hundred and forty-one of the 202 spots need to be tackled.
Premier Zhu Rongji emphasized that the strengthening on the monitoring and harnessing of the geological disasters including landslide is closely related to the safety of the people's lives and properties in the Three Gorges Dam regions. Great efforts must be made in harnessing the hidden disasters before the time of water-storage. Priority should be given to the harnessing of the areas, which are likely to have landslide after the reservoir being used.
Reports say that Ministry of Land and Resources has been carrying out the investigation on the situation of the geological disasters in that region so as to work out a specific plan for organizing and implementing the harnessing work. Funds for the prevention and harnessing of the geological disasters will be subsumed into the budget of the Three Gorges Project.
