Tuen Mun's Population to Be Youngest in HK

Tuen Mun's population will be the youngest in Hong Kong in 2010, the median age being 35, while the population in Wan Chai will be the oldest among the 18 districts of Hong Kong, the median age being 44, according to the latest forecast published by the Hong Kong government.

Sha Tin will remain the most populous with 680,000 in 2010, against 610,000 in 2000. Kwun Tong will come second, with a projected population of 650,000 in 2010.

According to the ten-year projections, Yuen Long with 150,000 more in the district will have the largest population increase, followed by the Islands District with an increase of 110,000, and Sai Kung with 100,000.

Adopting the usual place of residence as the yardstick, the report projected that 53 percent of the Usual Residents will be residing in the New Territories by 2010, as compared with a little less than 50 percent in 2000.

Kowloon's share of the population is expected to remain stable at around 31 percent, whereas a little over 16 percent of the population will reside on Hong Kong Island in 2010.
