Group Tourists to Macao Up in June

The number of visitors to China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) in tour groups reached 124,900 in June, up 4 percent from the same 2000 period, the latest official statistics show.

Figures released Wednesday by the Statistics and Census Services show that China's inland was the largest tourist source for Macao. The number of tourists from Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong reached 67,800, 38,000, 7,100 and 4,600, respectively.

On the other hand, 13,800 Macao residents, out of a population of some 440,000, traveled to other places in groups in June, soaring 20.3 percent from the same month of last year.

The most favored destination for Macao residents was also China 's inland areas, which attracted 74.8 percent of the total number of Macao tourists. The other destinations include Thailand and Taiwan.

Macao reported 720,800 tourist arrivals in the first half of this year, down 9.5 percent on a yearly basis, statistics show.
