Brazil Declares National Mourning for Renowned WriterBrazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso declared on Tuesday three days of national mourning for the death of renowned Brazilian writer Jorge Amado, Xinhua reported. The writer, who would celebrate his 89th birthday on August 10, died Monday night of heart and respiratory failure in a hospital of Salvador, in northeastern Brazil. Jorge Amado was one of the most renowned Brazilian writers living abroad. His works have been translated into 48 foreign languages and published in more than 50 countries. "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon," "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, " and "Teresa Batista Tired of War" are among his outstanding works. Jorge Amado was elected to membership in the Brazilian Academy of Literature in 1961. Five years later he was nominated for the Nobel prize in literature. Cardoso released Monday night an official announcement in which he expressed his deep sorrow at the writer's death. "Brazil lost today one of its best artists and the legacy of Jorge Amado transcends the work, which due to its richness and density, is the living example of what the human spirit can do in its highest creation," Cardoso said. Amado's death is considered to be a great loss not just for Brazil, but also for world literature.
