Naming Rights for Cloned Goats to be Auctioned

An international auction will be held for rights to name three cloned goats, the first generation of cloned animals in Shanghai, China's business and commercial center.

So far, many enterprises and individuals have shown strong interest in obtaining the rights through phone calls to the genetic modification research center of Shanghai, which successfully created the goats.

Experts believe that the three goats, born at the end of last year by cloning an adult animal cell, marked the formation of a technical platform, on which to further develop animal pharmacy, protect endangered animals and foster fine species.

Director Cheng Guoxiang of the research center, who led the goat cloning experiment, decided against the usual practice of naming the goats after his own name.

Through the international auction, he said, broad social support will be aroused for the development of cloning technology, a long-term basic research in need of social understanding and assistance.
