China Has Five Million Young Volunteers

More than five million young volunteers are now working in the urban communities of China, offering various services to local residents.

This was revealed by Hu Chunhua, a member of the Secretariat of the Chinese Communist Youth League's Central Committee, at a national conference on urban communities held here recently.

China launched a campaign in December, 1993, to mobilize young people across the country to help those who need aid from society.

Since then, more and more youngsters in China have played an active role in taking care of senior citizens, the disabled and orphans, and holding training courses for laid-off and migrant workers.

China started a new registration system for young volunteers in May this year, with the aim to strengthen and standardize the campaign, Hu said.

Those who have registered are asked to participate in at least 48 hours of volunteer service each year.
