Macedonia Set to Sign Peace Deal

The European Union foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, says he expects a deal to be finalised in Macedonia August 6 to end a six-month rebellion by ethnic Albanians that has threatened to tip the country into civil war.

Macedonian and ethnic Albanian political leaders are to meet again to finalise the details of a peace accord after Mr Solana brokered an agreement resolving the main sticking point.

This had been the issue of ethnic Albanian representation on the police force which, together with the status of the Albanian language, had threatened to foil any agreement.

Javier Solana now says he is hopeful both sides will finalise the new agreement.

"We got a deal on the police document, therefore we have now the language and the police settled," he said.

"I hope very much that people will be intelligent enough to finalise [the deal], having the most difficult parts - language and police - solved."
