China to Host 16th Asia International Art Exhibition

The 16th Asia International Art Exhibition is scheduled to open in this capital of south China's Guangdong Province from December 18 this year to January 10, 2002, the organizers announced Monday in Guangzhou.

It will be the first time for China to stage a comprehensive exhibition of contemporary arts for Asian countries.

The annual event, sponsored by art committees mainly in the Southeast Asian countries, aims to boost Asia's artistic and cultural exchanges.

Over 390 works from 12 countries and regions are expected to be on exhibition. Nearly 10,000 works on the internet are also to be on the show.

The entries are to be selected by member countries of the exhibition based on this year's theme: Asia, Multipolar Advances.

Some 1,150 domestic and overseas artists are expected to attend the exhibition.

The Guangdong Art Museum will be the venue for the event. Wang Huangsheng, curator of the museum, said that an opening Asia in the 21st Century is a magnet for global attention. Preserving and developing the cultural identities of every nation so as to enhance Asia's comprehensive image will be the common task for all Asian countries in this century, Wang added.
