China Sets Targets for Key Economic Sectors

The Chinese government made public Sunday a set of plans for a dozen crucial economic areas that it will give priority to over the next five years.

The State Development Planning Commission announced that it has drafted special plans for such key areas as urbanization, population, employment and social security, science, technology and education, ecological development and environmental protection, water conservancy, integrated transport systems, energy development, accession to the World Trade Organization, utilization of information technology and development of the western regions of China.

According to the commission, the subjects of the special plans are either key areas of the country's reform and modernization drive or weak links in the economy that need immediate improvement.

The special plans are more detailed than the Tenth Five-Year Plan, which the Chinese government has drafted for the 2001-2005 period.

All these plans will be publicized in the Chinese media from next week.
