Chinese Fencers Grab 2 Golds at Asian Championship

The Chinese fencers dominated the opening day of the Asian Championship which kicked off Saturday in Bangkok, local media reported Sunday morning.

Three Chinese fencers reached the man's epee semi-finals, with South Korean Kim Sang-Hun the only non-Chinese semi-finalist. Xie Yongjun disposed of Kim 6-5 to set up a final showdown with veteran teammate Zhao Gang, who defeated Wang Lei 15-14.

In an exciting final, Sydney Olympian Zhao edged Xie in golden touch time after the score reached 9-9.

In women's saber final, sixteen-year-old Huang Haiya made it a golden double for China as she swept past teammate Bao Yingying, clinching gold by winning 15-8.

For the host Thailand, two of their male fencers reached last 16, which enhances their chances of getting a medal in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games.
