Ethiopia Gains Largest Credit from World Bank Loan in Sub-Sahara Africa

Ethiopia has become the biggest beneficiary from this year's World Bank loan to sub-Sahara African countries, the Ethiopian Herald newspaper said on Saturday.

Ethiopia has so far obtained about 666 million U.S. dollars of the total 3.4 billion which the World Bank loaned to the sub- Sahara Africa this year, the paper said.

The report also said that the bank's loan to the sub-Sahara Africa has shown a 54-percent growth as compared with last year's 2.2 billion dollars.

This increased loan reflected the World Bank's commitment to assist the countries with strong economic and social reform programs for poverty reduction, regional cooperation and integration activities and human development, particularly the fight against HIV/AIDS, the report added.

Meanwhile, Callisto Madavo, World Bank Vice-President for African was quoted as saying that economic growth in the Sub- Sahara Africa is mixed with some countries doing well and others registering modest economic performance.
