Beijing Police Hold First Open Activity for Public

About 300 residents in Beijing were offered a rare opportunity Saturday to see first hand how local police do their job.

At the invitation of police in Xicheng District, the residents toured the Xicheng police station, visited an exhibition on the campaign against crime, viewed police vehicles and equipment, and watched police demonstrations of "hand-to-hand combat" and marksmanship.

Qiang Wei, director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Public Security, said more such events will be held in the future to give people a better idea of how police do their work. .

He said public safety in the city has improved in the first half of this year due to the on-going crackdown on crime.

The number of security complaints dropped by 6.2 percent over the same period of last year, while the number of cases uncovered rose by 62.7 percentage points, he revealed.

Luo Feng, vice-minister of Public Security, and Qiang Wei held a forum with guests, who were encouraged to air opinions and ask pointed questions on crime control.

Saturday's activity was of smaller scope than the one held on March 24 by south China's Guangdong province, first police-public event ever held in China.

For the past few years, Chinese police have been working to improve their image and seek public support for their work.
