International SOS to Support Universiade

The 10,000 athletes, coaches and officials attending the oncoming 21st Universiade will receive immediate and effective emergency medical treatment if in need of it.

The signing ceremony of co-operation between the organizing committee of the games and the International SOS was held Friday in Beijing. The company will provide emergency assistance to the Universiade, which will be held between August 22 and September 1.

A total of 6,625 athletes from 152 countries and regions will attend the global students' sports meet, together with coaches, officials and other relevant people.

"Foreign athletes that suffer from severe injuries and illness will be sent back to their own countries'' said John Williams, managing director of the China office of International SOS.

It will be better for patients to communicate with physicians with the same cultural background, he explained.

Co-operations between the Municipal Bureau of Health of Beijing and International SOS began in 1995 when Beijing hosted the Fourth World Conference on Women, said vice-director of the bureau, Jin Dapeng, Friday when presenting the signing ceremony.

As the biggest medical risk management corporation with more than 50 branches in 42 countries, the company was also designated to assist in the bidding for the 2008 Olympics and the 2000 Sydney Olympics, according to Williams.

Jin vowed to provide high-quality medical services during the games, backed by Beijing's rich medical resources of more than 9,000 medical organizations.

The medical department of the Universiade's organizing committee will conduct rehearsals on Sunday, according to Jin.
