Substandard US Potato Flour Rejected in CustomsChina has strengthened inspection of imported potato flour from the United States after the State Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) discovered earlier this year that several batches of the flour failed to meet Chinese food standards.The potato flour, found to have contained a bleaching powder in levels higher than allowed for food, was used for smashed potatoes sold at a "renowned fast food chain restaurant," says a report from Friday's China Daily. However, the AQSIQ did not identify the restaurant, the report says. From February to May this year, up to 40,000 kilograms of potato flour imported from the United States were found to have failed the Chinese health standards and returned, according to the AQSIQ. The administration said it has informed the US Embassy and urged it to notify US businesses to strengthen quality control to ensure that their products meet the Chinese standards. |
