Causes Determined for East China LandslideThe landslide that killed over two dozen people Monday in a quarry in east China's Jiangxi Province was the result of unauthorized operation, rescuers confirmed on August 2.The landslide occurred at around 8:00 a.m. Monday in a quarry in Taqian, a town near the city of Leping, causing 24 deaths and four missing. Over 1,000 soldiers and civilians joined the rescue efforts, which lasted for three days until 12:00 p.m. Thursday. Officials from the Ministry of Land and Resources and State Administration for Supervision of Production Safety urged Thursday that all the illegal mines and quarries in the province should be closed to ensure production safety. Sources say some local villagers had violated rules by blasting away the quarry in their operation, causing the upper rocks to slide and bury all 37 workers present, nine of whom have survived. |
