Germany to Reopen Embassy in Baghdad This Month

Germany will reopen its embassy in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad later this month to promote bilateral relations, the official weekly Al-Zawra quoted a senior official as reporting on Thursday.

Terming the event as a "very important" move for the growth of bilateral relations, Iraqi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Naji Sabri Ahmed said that the Iraqi-German Joint Committee for Economic and Technological Cooperation will be resumed afterwards.

Germany closed its embassy before the outbreak of the 1991 Gulf War, triggered by Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

Germany, one of Iraq's largest trade partners before the Gulf War, has been increasingly interested in developing relations with Iraq to make up huge losses it has sustained due to the decade-old sweeping international sanctions on Iraq imposed since the Gulf War.
