Philippine Ex-President Insists His Innocence

Former Philippine President Joseph Estrada Thursday insisted he is innocent after appearing at the pre-trial hearing for his perjury case at the anti-graft court in Manila.

Estrada said in a press conference after the hearing that his lawyers will file another motion to allow him to undergo medical treatment for his left eye, which has been causing him pain and poor vision.

The pre-trial hearing ended before noon after four hours of arguments by the prosecutions and defense panels on matters related to the trial.

The parties discussed documentary evidence and planned witnesses, and scheduled the trial for October 29 to 31, with the marking of evidence set on August 8 and September 14.

This is the third court appearance of the 64-year-old Estrada, who is detained at a military hospital.
